Versus: race real players
Every Flappy Spikes run can be a race. In Versus you fly against a real player's recorded run, and their score climbs next to yours while you fly. Beat it to win.
How a race works
Versus is the default mode on the Home screen. Tap START and the VS screen finds you a rival while it spins up: another player's name, picture or bird, and their look. Then your run starts as usual, and you wait for your first tap.
Your rival isn't flying live. You race a recorded run: when that player flew, the game saved when each of their points came in. During your run their score replays on the same clock, point by point, so it feels like they're flying right next to you. Recorded runs mean there is always someone to race, any time, with no waiting for a lobby and no lag.
The versus bar
At the top of the screen, the versus bar shows the race: your score in the pink box on the left, theirs on the right, with VS in the middle and both names underneath. Their box flashes gold every time their score goes up, and dims once their recorded run has ended. Then it's just you against their final score.
Matching
The game first looks for a run from a player at your rank that scored less than your best, so the race is one you can win; if there is none, any recent run will do. Players you haven't met for a while come first, and you are never matched against your own runs. If no rival turns up within a few seconds, the VS screen says NO RIVAL FOUND and you fly solo; the next run tries again.
Win, lose or draw
When your run ends, the results page compares the two final scores. A higher score wins and pays 10 coins; the same score is a draw and pays 5 coins. Lose and you still keep everything you earned in the run. Every run, won or lost, also counts toward your best score and your rank.
Free Fly if you'd rather fly solo
Not in the mood for a race? The mode button above START switches between VERSUS and FREE FLY. Free Fly is the classic game: no rival, no VS screen, just you, the hoops and the spikes. The how to play guide covers everything that happens in a run.
Your nickname
Other players see you under a nickname the game makes up for you, like RapidParrot411: an adjective, a bird and three digits, so there is never any free text. If you sign in to Google Play Games, your Play Games name and picture are used instead. Your rivals also see your bird in the hats, gear and trail you picked, so dress it up.
Your data
To be raced, some of your runs are stored on our server with an anonymous account: your nickname, your look, your score and the replay of the run. Versus data is deleted automatically about 60 days after your last run, and you can delete it any time from Settings, or by email. Everything is explained on the delete your data page and in the privacy policy.
