The Flappy Spikes story

Flappy Spikes first flew on iPhone in 2014. Twelve years later Duo Leads rebuilt it from scratch, kept everything that made it Flappy Spikes, and gave it hoops, versus races and a whole flock of new birds.

The Classic pink bird.

2014: a one-tap game for iPhone

The first Flappy Spikes was a small iPhone game, written in 2014. The idea was as simple as it gets: one tap is one flap, and you guide a square pink bird through gaps in a row of pipes. Strips of spikes ran along the top and the bottom of the screen, and touching anything ended the run.

Every few points the whole screen changed colour, from soft grey to teal, green, blue and finally gold. The score sat in a big circle in the middle of the screen, behind the action. Four short sounds did the rest: the flap, the point, the click and the game over. Your best score went to a Game Center leaderboard.

What stayed

When the game came back, the rule was: if it was in the 2014 game, it stays the way it was. So today's Flappy Spikes still has:

  • the Classic pink bird, the first of 30;
  • the spike strips on the top and the bottom of the screen;
  • the colour stages: the same 11 palettes, now changing every 10 hoops;
  • the score circle behind the action, in the same digital font;
  • the original sounds for the flap, the point, the click and the game over;
  • the flat, hard-edged art style: every new bird, hat and hoop is drawn the same way.

2026: rebuilt from scratch

In 2026 Duo Leads rebuilt the game from the ground up for Android, with every position, speed and colour taken from the 2014 original. The first Android release in July 2026 played just like the iPhone game. Then the new parts arrived: background music by ElectroBaptist, power-ups, portal rides, bird skins with hats, gear, hoops and trails, and ten ranks from Egg to Legend.

From pipes to hoops

The biggest change: the pipes are gone. In the 2014 game you squeezed through a gap between two pipes. Now you fly through hoops, rings you thread the bird through. Touching a rim no longer ends the run; the bird bounces off. The spikes are still deadly, and missing a hoop still costs you.

Hoops made new things possible: perfect passes and fire streaks, rings that spring, switch or spin, and portals into rides. How to play shows them all.

Versus and Free Fly

The 2014 game had a leaderboard, but you always flew alone. Now every run can be a race: in Versus you fly against a real player's recorded run and watch their score climb next to yours. If you'd rather fly on your own, switch to Free Fly. Read how Versus works.

What's next

Flappy Spikes started on iPhone, and it's going back: the iPhone version is coming. Until then, the game is free on Google Play. New birds and skins keep coming too; see every bird and rank.
